CARNATIONS Student Liam Carey Receives DOT Outstanding Student Award 2025

CARNATIONS student Liam Carey of Virginia Tech has received the UTC Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the U.S. Department of Transportation. His achievements reflect excellence in navigation research, including work conducted through the CARNATIONS REACH program under the mentorship of Professor Mathieu Joerger and industry partners.

CARNATIONS is proud to recognize Liam Carey, a student of the CARNATIONS program at Virginia Tech, for receiving a distinguished national award that highlights his excellence in navigation research.

Liam Carey won the UTC Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). This award recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, and meaningful contributions to transportation research.

In addition, during Fall 2025, Liam received the Best Presentation Award at the Institute of Navigation’s GNSS+ Conference, the premier international conference in the field of navigation. This honor reflects the quality, impact, and clarity of his research contributions presented to an audience of experts.

Liam was also a participant in CARNATIONS REACH(Research Engagement and
Collaboration Hub)
, where he completed a project titled “Performance Analysis of CUSUM-Based Anti-Spoofing Algorithms.” As part of this project, Liam conducted a systematic evaluation of advanced GPS anti-spoofing techniques using simulation-based analysis, contributing to CARNATIONS’ broader goals of advancing resilient and secure navigation systems. The project was mentored by Steve Langel at The MITRE Corporation.

Liam conducts his research at Virginia Tech under Professor Mathieu Joerger, whose mentorship has supported Liam’s achievements and continued contributions to the field.
